Parity Check

The ASCII system is a 7 bit system, because the 8th bit is a parity check.
ASCII - American Standard Code for Information Interchange
7 bits = 128 characters. 

Extended ASCII & Unicode
8 bits = 256 characters UTF-8 UTF-16
